Root and Rebound’s 5th Annual Benefit, Shedding Light into Darkness: Honoring Writers for Justice will feature live music, a silent auction, delicious food, an open wine and beer bar, and a fireside chat between two incredible speakers, Donna Hylton and James Forman, Jr. Our honored guests will join together in conversation about some of the most challenging issues of our time and in our justice system. These two writers for justice have spent their careers shedding light into darkness, and we will honor their work on October 3rd by sharing it with all of you! Books for purchase and signing available after the event.

More about our speakers:

James Forman, Jr.  is an American legal scholar, Professor of Law at Yale Law School and Pulitzer Prize winner for his book   Locking Up Our Own: Crime and Punishment in Black America  . Mr. Forman is a renowned speaker and author whose work has been featured on  The Daily Show with Trevor Noah ,  Talks with Goldman Sachs , and as a guest on  Fresh Air with Terry Gross .

James Forman, Jr. is an American legal scholar, Professor of Law at Yale Law School and Pulitzer Prize winner for his book Locking Up Our Own: Crime and Punishment in Black America. Mr. Forman is a renowned speaker and author whose work has been featured on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Talks with Goldman Sachs, and as a guest on Fresh Air with Terry Gross.

Donna Hylton  is a renowned activist for criminal justice reform who was sentenced to 25 years-to-life when she was just 20 years old. While incarcerated, Donna earned her BS in Behavioral Sciences and a Master’s of Arts in English Literature. Today, Donna is a women’s rights and justice reform advocate who speaks about the issues incarcerated women and girls face and the impact it has on families, children, and communities. Recently, Donna was a featured speaker at the  2017 Women’s March  in Washington D.C., and published her memoir,   A Little Piece of Light   in 2018.
