Community Trainings & Public Education

Root & Rebound conducts trainings on reentry issues across the state of California, from urban centers with high numbers of people returning home to rural and Native communities so often overlooked by service providers. With people facing thousands of legal barriers after incarceration, we believe a successful reentry support system requires greater skills for self-advocacy and legal know-how in all communities and among all stakeholders: currently and formerly incarcerated people, their family and loved ones, case managers and social workers, advocates, and staff at government agencies.

In addition to our in-person trainings, in October 2016, we launched the first-ever online training hub for people in reentry - the first of its kind in the United States! You can visit the Online Training Hub here: http://reentrytraininghub.org/

Below, you can check out our training highlights, sign up for our program team's e-Community Newsletter, and view our calendar of upcoming training events!

Empowerment summit for formerly incarcerated students and their families with street scholars and merritt college

In partnership with Street Scholars at Merritt College, R&R hosted our 1st Empowerment Summit for Formerly Incarcerated Students and Families in the Bay Area on April 19-20.

The event was hugely successful, convening over 300 local students, educators, social service providers, policymakers, advocates, and employers under one roof to learn about barriers in access to education and employment for students with records, and brainstorm ways we can dismantle the barriers, support students and families, and heal from the trauma that mass incarceration has inflicted on our communities.

We are exhilarated by the support and feedback we've received about the event thus far, and look forward to hosting more community gatherings like this in the future!

Online training hub
New Content Added may 2017!

Root & Rebound is proud to announce the release of its new Online Training Hub! http://reentrytraininghub.org/

This interactive website offers video-based trainings and educational supplements on each of the 9 reentry topics covered in the "Roadmap to Reentry: A California Legal Guide."

We have just added new content according to the needs we see on our hotline and through our trainings: videos on Prop 64, Prop 57 and immigration consequences (in English, Mandarin and Spanish). We also have uploaded a new walk-through with our Executive Director Katherine Katcher to make using the hub as efficient and beneficial as possible!

The site currently includes free access to all people supporting those in reentry or navigating their own reentry. View the site here: http://reentrytraininghub.org/
