Community Trainings & Public Education

Root & Rebound conducts trainings on reentry issues across the state of California, from urban centers with high numbers of people returning home to rural and Native communities so often overlooked by service providers. With people facing thousands of legal barriers after incarceration, we believe a successful reentry support system requires greater skills for self-advocacy and legal know-how in all communities and among all stakeholders: currently and formerly incarcerated people, their family and loved ones, case managers and social workers, advocates, and staff at government agencies.

Note: In addition to our in-person trainings, in October 2016, we launched the first-ever online training hub for people in reentry - the first of its kind in the United States! You can visit the Online Training Hub here: http://reentrytraininghub.org/

Reentry prep curriculum INSIDE PRISON with prison fellowship

In 2015, a Prison Fellowship (PF) Field Director attended a Root & Rebound training on the "Roadmap to Reentry" guide in Los Angeles. She said she had never seen such a comprehensive resource for people to know their rights in reentry.

Based on our "Roadmap to Reentry" guide, she developed a 5-week PF curriculum to better prepare her incarcerated students in four prisons for reentry. R&R's team worked with PF to develop surveys to assess students' needs and impact of the curriculum. PF students continue to contact our team with questions about reentry through our Reentry Legal Hotline and prison letter-writing service, both available to people who are currently incarcerated.
