DIRECT Legal Services
Root & Rebound provides free legal information, advice, referrals, and, where appropriate, representation, to people in reentry. We assist with clients on critical matters such as parole and probation issues, family law, housing, employment, and public benefits.
Our intake process with new clients identifies the barriers that make reintegration more challenging—from lack of family support to lack of safe housing. With the client onboard as an invested partner and problem solver, together we develop a reentry plan for vetted services that addresses the client’s legal, social, educational, and psychological needs. We then work to meet these needs by providing legal services in-house and by collaborating with service providers in their community to provide extra-legal services. We build strong relationships with these community-based organizations to facilitate connections with our clients. We also counsel clients on how to advocate for themselves, helping them develop strategies for self-care and resilience—tools to use in challenging moments.
In 2015, Root & Rebound launched the "Roadmap to Reentry" Guide and Interactive Hub that provides multiple avenues for reentering individuals and their advocates to access our services and gain access to critical information and resources.
NOTE: We do not take client walk-ins at our downtown Oakland office.
Root & Rebound operates a Reentry Advice Hotline every Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. that is open for anyone with reentry-related legal issues, questions, or concerns. We look forward to hearing from you.
