Certificate of Rehabilitation (COR) Workshop

  • Root & Rebound 1730 Franklin Street Oakland, CA, 94612 United States

Certificates of Rehabilitation are a potentially powerful yet underutilized tool for people with criminal records in California. Because we believe people do not have the information they need about the process, and therefore do not apply, Root & Rebound, in partnership with Project Rebound at SFSU, is embarking on a campaign to expand the use, impact and value of Certificates of Rehabilitation in California. Students and alumni of Project Rebound, which serves more than 300 students on the SFSU campus, came to R&R with this initiative, expressing the need for this program for students and alumni with higher education degrees, years of wonderful work in the community, and yet no sense of how they could get a certificate to demonstrate their rehabilitation.

Our goal with Project Rebound with this project is twofold: 1) to directly aid and educate those who are eligible to apply for CORs (as well as their advocates and attorneys) about the application process, the benefits of applying, and their right to be informed; and 2) to educate the public, including judges, attorneys, employers, licensing boards, and professionals, about the existence of CORs, their value, and their impact.

The first part of this campaign will be an educational workshop in Root & Rebound's office on Thursday, May 5th, to explain the benefits of a COR, the application process, eligibility requirements, and best strategies for applying. Once people attend the workshop and are screened for eligibility, they can attend the COR Legal Clinic in our office, on Wednesday, May 25th, to begin preparing materials for court.
