Women & The System
In anticipation of our 4th Annual Benefit, Celebrating the Strength & Power of Women in the System, we wanted to create an opportunity for the women in our network who are impacted by and working to change the criminal justice system to share their stories and perspectives on mass incarceration.
Each week until the benefit, we will be posting a new video from a different woman’s perspective on why mass incarceration is a women's issue and why Root & Rebound's work is so crucial. Each video is made by the women featured, in their own style and voice. Many of the women will be at the Benefit on September 20th, either as panel speakers or honored guests.
“The law is a double edged sword—it can cut you going in and can cut you going out— but somebody had to cut us, people of color, a piece of that freedom, a piece of that justice, because we knew that the law was not working for us, it was working against us. Root & Rebound allows us to be free, allows us to be able to know we can use the law on our side, by our side, with our side, for change.” - Kim Carter, Founder of Time For Change Foundation
We hope these videos will shed light on the experiences of women in the system whose voices too often go unheard. Mothers, sisters, and daughters who have endured countless injustices, yet manage to persevere and stand strong as backbones of their families and their communities.
Please share these videos to help to start the conversation about the criminal justice system’s impact on women. You can support Root & Rebound, and women in the system, by buying tickets to R&R's 4th Annual Benefit here.

Root & Rebound's 4th Annual Benefit
We hope you will join at SOMArts in San Francisco on September 20th for a celebration of Root & Rebound's five years of action to increase access to justice-with a focus on our work on behalf of women. The event will feature an auction with more than 50 incredible items, live music, local food & drink, and an inspiring panel of women impacted by the system from across the state, representing Black, Latinx, and Tribal communities. It will be a night to remember, to honor the resilience of women who are today working to advance justice.
