Root & Rebound (R&R) is a nonprofit reentry advocacy center whose mission is to restore power and resources to the families and communities most harmed by mass incarceration through legal advocacy, public education, policy reform, and litigation—a model rooted in the needs and expertise of people who are directly impacted. We work to build innovative, holistic, and creative solutions to solve the reentry crisis across California and the United States. As a diverse and creative team of attorneys, advocates, and activists, we offer a strong work culture of supportive supervision and team-based collaboration, where people get to be challenged, receive ongoing professional development, and do impactful work.

Root & Rebound seeks a Development Associate to join its small, but mighty team, working toward growing and sustaining Root & Rebound’s $3.6+ M budget for FY 21-22.

This part-time (20-30 hours per week), nonexempt position will report to the Director of Development and Communications

Location: This role is ideally based out of Root & Rebound’s headquarters in Oakland, CA, however, excellent California-based candidates who are located outside of the Bay Area will be considered. At the moment, we are currently 100% remote.  R&R has strong COVID-19 precautions and procedures to prioritize the health and safety of our staff, clients, and community members.

About the Development Associate

The Development Associate is responsible for sustaining institutional partnerships and carrying out all activities related to the organization’s institutional/foundation-focused fundraising, which makes up approximately 75% of organizational revenues. As such, the Development Associate writes and submits grant proposals, grant reports, funder communications, and other writing projects, organizes and tracks all information related to institutional/foundation funders, and researches as needed.

We seek someone who is an excellent writer with impeccable attention to detail and deadlines, and strong organizational skills. The right candidate thrives in fast-paced environments that demand creativity, innovation, and piloting new systems and ideas.

This person is technologically savvy and comfortable with Google Suite, and can learn/adjust to our customer relationship management software (Copper CRM), Mailchimp, and Excel. They are a great communicator, who leans into problem-solving through collaboration and direct feedback, and are eager to take initiative.

Core Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Director of Development & Communications, the Development Associate will support the development team including in all fundraising efforts with a main focus on drafting grant proposals for government institutions and foundations.

Other duties may include development team and communications support, assisting in data tracking, special event planning, as well as other administrative duties.

  • Draft proposals, including deliverables, and after review by the Director of Development & Communications and Program Deputy Directors, submit all grant proposals. 
  • Research new prospects and grantmaking opportunities to sustain and grow the organization’s operating revenue.
  • Maintain the grants pipeline to schedule grant submissions for the year
  • Further build out and maintain the reports work plan. 
  • Draft narrative and financial reports for specific project funding as needed in collaboration with the Executive Director and outside finance team. 
  • Schedule and attend a weekly meeting with the Director of Development & Communications for an update on development activities.
  • Attend weekly development team meetings and report on grant proposals and reporting activities.
  • Update and maintain the organization’s GuideStar profile as well profiles on other sites such as the Better Business Bureau, that rate nonprofits’ transparency, finances and DEI policies.
  • Maintain development files and records.
  • Assist with the planning and coordinating of donor events and campaigns.
  • Assist in additional writing projects as needed, including but not limited to the newsletter and annual appeal.
  • Ensure funder data is up to date in the CRM system.

Qualifications & Qualities Sought:

  • 3+ years of experience in grant writing at a similar, fast-paced, nonprofit organization. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software as well as Google Suite (Gmail, Google Calendar, 
  • Google Drive, Google Docs). 
  • Proficiency with a CRM or similar data management software. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to social, racial, and criminal justice.
  • Flexible, adaptable, and able to prioritize multiple projects given organizational needs. 
  • Team-based and collaborative approach to work.
  • Creative, inspiring, and strong writer, unafraid to bring new ideas and new ways of 
  • communicating about our work to the world. 
  • Ability to write for different audiences and to adapt and change writing styles; 
  • Enthusiastic, and willing to learn and try new things. 
  • Responsible and reliable, with a strong work ethic. 
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills. 

Compensation & Benefits:

  • The Development Associate’s role is a part-time, non exempt position, with a competitive compensation commensurate with experience. Employment benefits at R&R include:
