About Root & Rebound: Root & Rebound (R&R) is a nonprofit reentry advocacy center whose mission is to restore power and resources to the families and communities most harmed by mass incarceration through legal advocacy, public education, policy reform, and litigation—a model rooted in the needs and expertise of people who are directly impacted. We work to build innovative, holistic, and creative solutions to solve the reentry crisis across California and the United States. Root & Rebound seeks a Manager/Director of Institutional Partnerships to join its small, but mighty team, working toward growing and sustaining Root & Rebound’s $3.6+ M budget for FY 21-22.

Commitment: Full-time, exempt; reporting to the Executive Director, overseeing key members of the development team as we grow. 

Location: This role is ideally based out of Root & Rebound’s headquarters in Oakland, CA, however, excellent candidates outside of the Bay Area will be considered. At the moment, we are currently 100% remote, with a flexible back-to-work plan for Fall 2021. R&R has strong COVID-19 precautions and procedures to prioritize the health and safety of our staff, clients, and community members.

About the Development Manager/Director of Institutional Partnerships:

The Development Manager/Director of Institutional Partnerships is responsible for growing and sustaining institutional partnerships and carrying out all activities related to the organization’s institutional/foundation-focused fundraising, which makes up approximately 75% of organizational revenues. As such, the Manager/Director of Institutional Partnerships writes and submits grant proposals, grant reports, funder communications, and other writing projects, organizes and tracks all information related to institutional/foundation funders, and conducts ongoing funder prospect research as needed to sustain and grow the organization’s operating revenue. 

The Manager/Director of Institutional Partnerships reports directly to the Executive Director, who plays a significant fundraising role. This individual will oversee the Data & Technology Coordinator (AmeriCorps VISTA), who collects and analyzes data needed for all grants and reports, and works alongside, and supports other members of the Development Team who focus on individual donors, corporate sponsors, and communications. 

The ideal candidate excels at relationships building and is enthusiastic about building new connections for the organization. We seek someone who is an excellent writer with impeccable attention to detail and deadlines, and strong organizational skills. The right candidate thrives in fast-paced environments that demand creativity, innovation, and piloting new systems and ideas. 

This person is technologically savvy and comfortable with Google Suite and can learn/adjust to our customer relationship management software (Copper CRM), project management systems (Asana), Mailchimp, and Excel. They are a great communicator, who leans into problem-solving through collaboration and direct feedback, and are eager to take initiative.

Development and Institutional Partnerships at Root & Rebound:

Root & Rebound’s annual budget is primarily supported by grants from institutional partners (approximately 75%). This includes private foundations and government grants, with significant additional contributions from individual donors, earned revenue, and events. In order for Root & Rebound to scale to meet the needs of its programs and services across California, South Carolina, and nationally, it is essential to the organization’s direction that our funding stream continues to grow significantly. Root & Rebound’s development goals include a substantial increase in unrestricted contributions in subsequent years, growth in foundation grants, and the creation of a high-functioning development operation. With our bold ambitions and unique theory of change, this is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to support Root & Rebound’s Development team in sustaining and strategically growing its programs across California and nationwide. 

Core Responsibilities:

Manage the grant writing and submission process from start to finish for 60+ grant proposals each year, including:

  • Conducting ongoing prospect research and analysis of new grant opportunities; liaise with foundation and institutional staff through phone calls, meetings, etc., and serve as an ambassador for the organization.
  • Supporting the Executive Director and key program staff in outreach, meetings, and relationship building with new and existing institutional partners;
  • Maintaining a work plan of planned grant submissions;
  • Serving as lead development point of contact for all grants; coordinate work with contract grant writer as/when support is needed; coordinating review of each grant by key R&R staff;
  • Developing and reworking narratives about all aspects of the organizations work to align with a diverse array of funding opportunities;
  • Working closely with development and program staff to define outcomes and indicators for each new grant;
  • Working closely with the Data & Technology Coordinator to pull necessary program-related data to inform/include in grant submissions;
  • Working closely with the Finance team to craft accurate budgets and financial reports accompanying grant proposals and reports, and to keep them updated on all grants awarded and pending for cash projection purposes; and
  • Working closely with multiple stakeholders to ensure timely input is received and staff, board, and strategic partners are brought to the table proactively and thoughtfully.

Manage communications, reporting deadlines, and deliverables associated with a portfolio of 45+ current institutional funders, including:

  • Managing grant data and monitoring the grant reporting schedule, ensuring team members are aware of upcoming deadlines and that deliverables are completed on time; 
  • Coordinating with and support program staff in writing and editing program-specific grant reports; and
  • Working closely with the Data & Technology Coordinator to pull necessary program-related data needed for grant reports and funder communications.
  • Lead bi-weekly check-in calls with Deputy Directors to ensure deadlines are being met

Other writing projects and funder communications as needed to support the Development and Programs teams: 

  • Supporting the ED to maintain stewardship and connection with institutional partners
  • Writing, editing, and coordinating review of a bi-monthly/quarterly newsletter for current institutional/foundation funders;
  • Drafting talking points, scripts, and/or program content for R&R fundraising and community events, including our Annual Report;
  • Representing R&R to funders, clients, partners, and other external stakeholders;
  • Attending meetings with, and representing R&R to current and prospective funders, alongside the Executive Director and key program staff; 
  • Interviewing current and past R&R clients about their experience with R&R’s staff and services, and crafting external-facing communications based on clients’ stories;
  • Meeting with development and leadership staff of R&R partner organizations in order to plan and carry out discrete joint fundraising efforts; and
  • Attending events and conferences to liaise with institutional partners and prospective partners, serving as a strong representative for the organization and its work.

Qualifications & Qualities Sought:

  • 5+ years of experience in grant writing at a similar, fast-paced, nonprofit organization; 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software as well as Google Suite (Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Google Docs);
  • Proficiency with a CRM or similar data management software;
  • Demonstrated commitment to social, racial, and criminal justice;
  • Strong project management, delegation, and coordination skills;
  • Flexible, adaptable, and able to prioritize multiple projects given organizational needs;
  • Team-based and collaborative approach to work;
  • Creative, inspiring, and strong writer, unafraid to bring new ideas and new ways of communicating about our work to the world;
  • Ability to write for different audiences and to adapt and change writing styles;
  • Excellent problem-solving skills;
  • Proactive in thinking of / designing creative solutions to advance our mission and work; 
  • Enthusiastic, and willing to learn and try new things;
  • Responsible and reliable, with a strong work ethic; 
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.

Compensation & Benefits:

The Manager/Director of Institutional Partnerships role is a full-time, exempt position, with a competitive salary commensurate with experience. The title for the role (Manager versus Director) as well as the salary will be determined based on the level of experience that the candidate brings to the role. Employment benefits at R&R include:
