Root & Rebound seeks a social-justice minded mid-level to senior attorney to supervise attorneys and serve the Central Valley and San Bernardino regions.

Root & Rebound (R&R) is a national reentry advocacy nonprofit, whose mission is to help people navigate reentry and reduce the harms perpetuated by mass incarceration. We provide holistic reentry legal services across all of California, with offices in Fresno and Oakland, and staff in Southern California as well. We provide legal know-your-rights information, and individual services on a wide variety of collateral consequences of a conviction including getting ID and voting, conditions of parole and probation, and employment and housing rights as they relate to an arrest or conviction history.  Learn more at www.rootandrebound.org. 


Our Central Valley Program (serving Merced, Madera, Fresno, Tulare, Kings, & Kern Counties) pairs reentry legal services with in-house social services and employment coaching. The Central Valley team works closely together to ensure that clients receive consistent and compassionate holistic services to achieve their individual, self-identified goals. Our Southern California team serves clients partnered with the Anti Recidivism Coalition and regionally in San Bernardino/Riverside.


Employment Status: This is a full-time, exempt role, reporting to the Deputy Director of California Programs


Location: Preference for someone based in either San Bernardino/Riverside OR Fresno, California. Fresno/Central Valley based employees will be required to work onsite in our Fresno office a minimum of three days/week. Employees based in other locations will be  required to work onsite as needed to cover court hearings and client meetings. 


About the Supervising Attorney position: R&R is currently hiring a Supervising Attorney focused on supporting our San Bernardino/Riverside and Central Valley clients in their reentry needs, as well as guiding and mentoring R&R attorneys. 


The Supervising Attorney will focus on assisting system-impacted individuals  residing in the under-resourced communities of San Bernardino, Riverside, and the Central Valley.  Using R&R’s holistic approach to reentry law, this position will work with clients who have been involved in the justice system and/or are formerly incarcerated. Our ideal candidate is compassionate, personable, and team-oriented, resides in San Bernardino/Riverside or Fresno, California and is able to travel to the regions for court appearances and in-person meetings and events. They will also conduct client intakes and supervise team members virtually. This person is excited about advancing the rights of people with criminal records and expanding R&R’s services and impact across the identified under-resourced communities. The successful candidate will communicate effectively, contribute to organizational strategies, and be eager to collaborate, provide, and accept support through regular check-ins and meetings with various members of the R&R team.


Responsibilities & Duties:

Direct Legal Services (45%):

  • Conduct holistic legal intakes, through R&R’s Friday reentry legal hotline and Attorney of the Day shifts (approximately 4 hours per week), to assess callers’ reentry legal needs and develop appropriate legal services plans.
  • Independently manage a reentry legal caseload (with an emphasis on employment and economic stability) of between 15-25 clients across the Central Valley and San Bernardino/Riverside regions.
  • Present know-your-rights trainings and facilitate legal clinics on key reentry topics. 
  • Collaborate with no-legal, programmatic staff including the social services manager, and employment coaches. 
  • Maintain necessary records for effective teamwork on cases, grant proposals, reports, and audits. 

Supervision of Attorneys and/or other Programmatic Staff Members (40%):

  • Supervise up to 4 attorneys and/or programs staff.
  • Conduct weekly check-ins with direct reports with an eye toward creating a supportive work environment, providing attorney training, and quality control.
  • Contribute to weekly case consults and case acceptance meetings. 
  • Oversee attorney work product, including reviewing all junior attorney court filings and all other outward-facing documents.
  • Recruit and onboard new attorneys as needed.  

Community Outreach and Partnership (10%):

  • Build partnerships and relationships with Central Valley and Riverside/San Bernardino stakeholders who are aligned with Root & Rebound’s work and mission. These may include legal services providers, government organizations, foundations and directly-impacted organizations.
  • Develop “Know Your Rights” fact sheets about relevant reentry legal issues and update our current educational resources, as needed.
  • Expand and maintain strong relationships with local law firms, law school clinics, volunteer attorneys, and legal service organizations.
  • Supervise legal volunteers and interns as needed.

Support the Fundraising efforts as needed (5%):

  • Maintain necessary records for grant reporting and audits;
  • Support development and communications.
  • Support fundraising efforts in the San Bernardino/Riverside and Central Valley regions to sustain and grow the program. This will include meeting with local institutional partners, foundations, government agencies, and individual donors. 


Required Qualifications:

  • At least five years of post-bar attorney experience, representing clients.
  • Licensed to practice law in the state of CA, in good standing.
  • Based in and/or is able to work from either the San Bernardino/Riverside or Central Valley region.
  • Prior experience supervising other attorneys or staff members. 
  • Able to manage a demanding case load. 
  • Flexible and able to prioritize work effectively with excellent time-management. 
  • Strong work ethic, resilience, and determination.
  • Able to legally drive in CA.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in Spanish. 
  • Training or experience working in the legal fields of reentry, public interest, employment, and economic stability law.
  • Experience working directly with system-impacted individuals.
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system and collateral consequences of a criminal record.

Compensation & Benefits: This role is a full-time, exempt position, with a competitive salary between $74,000-$86,000 commensurate with experience.  Employees who are fluent in Spanish receive an additional $2,000/year.
