About Root & Rebound:

Root & Rebound (R&R) is a national reentry advocacy nonprofit, whose mission is to help people navigate reentry and reduce the harms perpetuated by mass incarceration. Root & Rebound provides holistic reentry legal services across all of California, with offices in Fresno and Oakland, and staff in Los Angeles as well. We provide legal know-your-rights information and individual services on a wide variety of collateral consequences of a conviction including getting ID and voting, conditions of parole and probation, and employment and housing rights as they relate to an arrest or conviction history. 

Our Central Valley Program (serving Merced, Madera, Fresno, Tulare, Kings, & Kern counties) is unique in pairing reentry legal services with in-house social services and employment coaching. The Central Valley team works closely together to ensure that the people in our program get consistent and compassionate holistic services to achieve their individual, self-identified goals. 

Commitment: Full-time

Location: Fresno, California. This position requires working in the office at least three days/week and is a hybrid role until further notice.

About the Supervising Social Services Manager: The Supervising Social Services Manager will report directly to a Deputy Director of CA Programs.

Based out of the R&R Fresno office, the Supervising Social Services Manager will supervise our team of social service and employment coaches in the Central Valley, helping individuals with arrest and conviction histories to overcome barriers to employment and economic stability. Additionally, the Supervising Social Services Manager will be responsible for developing and expanding Root & Rebound’s social services across California in collaboration with the rest of the CA programs team, to achieve Executive Director’s vision of expanded holistic services for all of Root & Rebound’s clients. 

 

The ideal candidate is a leader who is a highly capable self-starter, team-oriented, and committed to expanding services, partnerships, and impact. This person is also excited about building and leveraging relationships across the state of California to improve the lives of people impacted by mass incarceration and living in poverty.  In addition, the Supervising Social Services Manager must be highly communicative, structured, and excellent at time management. 

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Provide direct social services: 
      • Carry a small caseload of social services clients (approximately 10 clients) at any given time; 
        • Enroll program participants through our holistic intake process; 
        • Coordinate referrals into the Fresno office from community supervision, nonprofit and government partner organizations, self-referrals, and the R&R reentry hotline;
        • Coordinate advocacy and leadership opportunities for the women in the program;
        • Flag reentry legal issues for the staff attorney as they arise;
        • Screen and warm-refer women to short term housing as needed;
        • Host at support groups and peer support gatherings for participants (in person or virtually); and   
      • Provide community training and information on Root & Rebound’s services, employment, and economic stability in reentry.  
  • Supervise social services team: 
      • Supervise the current social services team, including the social services manager(s), employment coaches, and Central Valley VISTA;
      • Build trusting and supportive relationships with direct reports and across Root & Rebound teams; 
      • Supervise all aspects of direct reports’ reentry services responsibilities; 
      • Ensure direct reports understand their responsibilities, are meeting them, and are getting the tools and support they need to meet them;
      • Approve client support funds in collaboration with the supervisor; and
      • Oversee social service volunteer and intern program. 
  • Lead social services programs
    • Oversee Central Valley Program events and programs with support from the Deputy Director of CA Programs;
    • Represent Root & Rebound in partnership development and deepening partnerships with funders, allies, and supporters across the Central Valley;
    • Proactively improve programming processes and evaluation to meet the mission and vision of Root & Rebound; 
    • Support and consult on expanding Root & Rebound’s state-wide social services; and 
    • Continue to build on the landscape assessment groundwork of Root & Rebound and Central Valley community partners. 
  • Support the Fundraising efforts as needed: 
    • Maintain necessary records in Root & Rebound’s client management system for grant reporting and audits;
    • Support Development, Communications, and Storytelling projects as needed; and
    • Support fundraising efforts in the Central Valley that will sustain and grow the program, including meetings with local institutional partners, foundations, government agencies, and individual donors. 

Qualifications:

  • 2+ years experience direct client social services experience, ideally to people with arrest and conviction histories;
  • 1+ years experience supervising other staff;
  • Training and experience working with people with records and/or in reentry, impacted by trauma, structural racism and other forms of oppression;
  • Deep knowledge of the Central Valley’s unique culture and communities; 
  • Ability to work both independently, with strong initiative, as well as collaboratively with a small team;
  • Demonstrated anti-oppressive supervision skills and commitment to anti-racist practice principles; 
  • Insight into, and understanding of, how issues of culture, race, language, and religious/spiritual difference, as well as gender identity, expression and sexual orientation, impact all stakeholders, including participants, donors, volunteers, and staff; and 
  • Professional maturity and ability to work effectively with an ethnic, culturally, and socially diverse participant population with a strong interest in social justice.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in Spanish; and
  • Formerly incarcerated and/or system-involved individuals strongly encouraged to apply.

Compensation & Benefits: This role is a full-time, non-exempt position, with a competitive hourly wage of between $34.00-38.00 per hour, commensurate with experience.  Employees who are fluent in Spanish receive an additional $1.00/hour. Employment benefits at R&R include:
