Coco graduated from Whitman College in 2021 with a B.A. in Psychology. Coco’s interest in legal advocacy and criminal policy reform began at Whitman, where she studied how the carceral system oppresses BIPOC communities through discriminatory legislation.

Coco’s senior thesis explored how educating people about systemic racism increases support for anti-racist policy. She found that individuals who believed in the existence of systemic racism were more likely to support policy changes, such as defunding the police. Additionally, Coco worked at the Successful Transition and Reentry (STAR) Project, a Walla Walla based non-profit that helps previously incarcerated people reenter society. Coco’s work achieved grant funding for the STAR Project’s case management program.

As Root and Rebound’s Development and Communications AmeriCorps VISTA, Coco will expand R&R’s reach through social media, strengthen relationships with donors, and plan marketing events.

In her free time, Coco loves spending time with her family, doing puzzles, hiking, and playing pickleball.

Why do you come to work at Root & Rebound every day?

Being a part of Root & Rebound means advocating for the rights of systems-impacted people while simultaneously working to change legislation and end mass incarceration. I am honored to have the opportunity to reform our criminal justice system and help systems-impacted people move forward with their lives.
