Before joining Root & Rebound, Mika was a paralegal for the Disability Rights Program at the ACLU, where she supported attorneys working on class action disability rights lawsuits across the country. Prior to that, she worked for five years as an advocate with the New York Legal Assistance Group, providing direct representation to people with disabilities in appeals of SSI and SSDI application denials, overpayments, and terminations. Mika also has experience as an AmeriCorps member at FEGS Health and Human Services, where she coordinated a job interview attire program, and as an administrative assistant in Brooklyn Law School’s Public Service Office. Mika spends her spare time sewing, keeping her bored cat entertained, and finding new recipes.

Why do you come to work at Root & Rebound every day?

Because a day spent taking small steps towards dismantling the carceral system and breaking down the 48,000 barriers to reentry is a good day. Because we can be the light that guides people through the multitude of bureaucratic mazes that make up reentry. Because I believe we must advance this work in a way that is directed by the needs and expertise of systems-impacted individuals, as is inherent in Root & Rebound’s mission.
