Shannon’s desire to support justice involved individuals started with helping loved ones navigate reentry. As someone who comes from a family of generational incarceration she understands that the effects of the carceral system do not end with the person incarcerated, and oftentimes it
is entire families who are affected.

Before finishing her bachelors degree in political science at UC Davis, she participated in Initiate Justice’s Impacted Leaders Fellowship. In this fellowship she, and other system impacted folks, were taught how to advocate for legislative change regarding the carceral system. During her time in the fellowship she heard of Root & Rebound and was inspired by the positive feedback from people who had used the organizations services. Shortly after graduating she began volunteering with Root and Rebound as a Social Services and Resource Volunteer.

Most recently, Shannon has started her position at Root & Rebound as the Northern California Outreach & Partnerships Coordinator and hopes to continue to support her community in any capacity she can.

Why do you come to work at Root & Rebound every day?

I come to work at Root & Rebound everyday in hopes that making resources more accessible for people in reentry will not only help the individual seeking those resources, but will also help others in their lives who are and have been affected by their incarceration. As someone whose
parents and siblings have been involved in the justice system, it is important to me that there is an abundance of supportive systems put in place so no person or family has to go through this journey of rebuilding alone.
