She received her J.D. from U.C. Berkeley School of Law in 2005. In law school, she worked on multiple cases as part of the Death Penalty Clinic, helped an individual get asylum in the California Asylum Representation Clinic, and helped coordinate a Know Your Rights program in a San Francisco juvenile hall. She also served as a research assistant for Franklin Zimring and as a law clerk or legal researcher at the Contra Costa Public Defender (Martinez, CA), National Council on Crime and Delinquency (Oakland, CA), National Center for Youth Law (Oakland, CA), and Youth Advocacy Centre (Brisbane, Australia).

Following law school, Jamie served as a staff attorney for Appellate Defenders, Inc., in San Diego for about eight years.  During this time, she also had the opportunity to be a volunteer mentor for two individuals recently released on parole as part of the VIP Mentors program.  After returning to the Bay Area, she focused her career on serving as defense counsel in court-appointed direct appeals in criminal cases. Before joining Root & Rebound in the capacity of the In-Prison Programs Attorney, she volunteered with Root & Rebound.

In her spare time, she enjoys taking short hikes, jogging while listening to podcasts, and exploring new places.

Why do you come to work at Root & Rebound every day?

I come to work at R&R in the hope of showing people impacted by the criminal system that they can and deserve to have the lives they want to have.  I aim to empower clients to know their legal rights and advocate for themselves, as well as to hold accountable agencies and individuals with power over others’ liberty and opportunity.
